Conficker: Infected Computers Pushing Out Spam

bitdefender_releases_conficker_removal_toolI had mentioned in a previous article about the spam being pushed out by the thousands thanks to its connection to the Waledac, well it would seem that Yahoo is a bit late in mentioning that news article or maybe not, depending on where you get your info from.  Either way,  I think the reason why this article was written, was that most “home” users don’t check out most computer magazine based websites and so this article can be considered a summary of whats been going on since April 1st.

I would like to point out that the author, Jim, is making a big assumption that the creators of Conficker are using Waledac or scareware, because of the fact that I mentioned that they could have sold rights to the source code to other users in order to do the stuff that is going on now.

So I rehash what is already know about the latest involvements, Waledac is another worm that is used to send thousands of spam emails from infected computers without them knowing it.  Of course, it also send fake anti-virus/spyware/malware/bot removal ad’s through the use of pop up ad’s.

The next addition to the Conficker attack package that came days after April 1st, is the fake software called Spyware Protect 2009 and for the suckers, gullible people it costs $49.95.  Now the best part about this, is not only will they get $50 from you, they also get your credit card number and download even more good stuff to computer.

Of course, I would like to point out that regardless of who is doing what, the Conficker boy’s are making a lot of money of which is funnled through various accounts that can’t be traced back to them.  Of course, thats where the flaw of scareware comes from, credit cards are traceable and usually the dumb ones get stupid off those cards.  Or the smart ones just sell off the numbers to make even more money, but either way the credit card number is the trojan horse of catching thieves.

Ok, that above paragraph did not make any sense and I had no idea where I was going with but I know most of it is false because computer hackers are not that stupid once they get credit card info.  Either way, if you start seeing strange payments on your credit card summaries, then look at your computer and get it cleaned out.
