8 Reason for Getting a PC Vs 8 Reasons to Get a Mac

3 May 2009 50 views No Comment

mac-vs-pc-3I came Across two articles from PCWorld.com that gave 8 reasons to Own A PC and 8 Reasons To Own A Mac and I thought today I would break down those 16 reasons and obviously give a bias opinion since I don’t own a Mac computer.  However, I will be fair though since Mac computers still have their place in society and the computer world.  So it should be interesting what I to ponder about as I go through this list and then come to a final conclusion and even though I am a PC guy I try not to be to mean about you Mac users.

1. Variety is the spice of computing

Right off the bat,  McCracken provides the best strength about PCs and that being they come in every shape and size, and they are designer for the home, student, business based users.  On top of that PC’s are also the most customizable as well, from the processor up the monitor and so there literally thousands of ways to build a computer.  However, that is were the Mac computer fails the most, because Apple restricts the type of hardware that goes into their computers and as for customization its whatever on the Apple website.

So right away PC wins that because of how versatile PC’s really are.

2. The cost of admission is lower

Again, PC wins this right away, just because of the fact prices for computers have drop significantly to the point that you can get a great PC for $500-600 and its top of the line hardware in them.  As for Mac computers, no one will deny they are beyond expensive and rival alienware computers in price and usually they start out at $2000-$3000.  Of course, the argument us PC users are saying is that Mac users are just paying for the label since they use the same type of hardware as PC’s.  Granted, the Mac computers are the best and worth every penny, but Steve Jobs needs to realize that if you want more Mac users you need to lower the price tag not increase it.

So PC wins this battle once again because of the cheap prices for great computers.

3. Windows PCs have worthwhile features that Macs don’t.

The argument here is that PC’s are offering more in terms of Hi-Def and blue-ray that is built into the PC while Mac computer you need to purchase third-party products in order to use them.  So the argument here is that PC comes with more stuff built in to be current with the technology while Mac just gives you a trimmed down computer with basic needs.  Now I can say that most people wouldn’t care of Hi-Def or blue-ray, but at least you have the option of replacing it with something else, and since Mac computers don’t give even the option to include it in the customization process they are kind of beating themselves with that.

In terms of options PC offers more while the Mac is in the process of removing more from its computers.

4. The more software the merrier

Need I say more on this, though companies are producing software for the Mac that can also be used on the PC, its the gaming industry that is killing Mac the most since not many companies produce games for the Mac.  Odds are Apple is uptight on letting software makers have access their hardware or there be more for Mac users to enjoy without the need to use it with a virtual operating system to use it.

5. Windows users get preferential treatment

AHAHAHAHA yes we do, no wonder hackers enjoy PC’s more, but again Apple is so uptight on letting outside sources touch their operating system that no wonder software companies prefer us.  Sorry I don’t see any downside to it.

6. You get the chance to do it yourself.

Refer to my argument in #1

7. Who says Macs have more fun?

Us PC gamers and movie watchers win this argument, enough said.

8. Windows-only corners of the Web remain

This ties into the browser wars and I will at most Apple doesn’t want to give people access to their operating system and so web designers have no choice but to design websites on PC based browsers.

PC 8 Mac 0

Although this is the 8 reasons to buy a PC it would seem Mac didn’t really have a shot of winning anything from this battle, who knows, maybe when I talk about Mac computers they might at least tie up.

1. Macs are consistently consistent

I will admit that is were Apple has come through is their operating system and each new operating system brings better features each time and for us Windows users, we need to download software in order to use them.  Best example is the docking feature Mac comes with, for us PC’s users we need software such as Rocketdock in order to use it.  Another feature I like is the time machine and being able to seamlessly go back into your computer from any time without having any problems, but the System Restore lacks anything useful.

2. The joy of predictability

What turn me off from Mac constantly crash back in the 90s and boy did I sound, but it would seem Mac has fix those crashing problems of which Microsoft has not.  Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) is the most infamous of crashes and although we love our Windows, the memory issues always plague us and I have to call it tie on this just because I haven’t spent enough time on a Mac to witness the crashes.

3. Who needs security headaches?

Now this is where the Mac shines, because of Apple’s tightness of letting outside sources in it has become a very secured operating system.  Of course, the only reason for that is that all the computer criminals are attacking PC’s and so if the PC attackers spent as much time on cracking the Mac OS, Apple will be severaly hurt but it since they lack any security software.  So one day Mac will get whats coming to them and boy will Apple be hurt big time when all the security holes are found.

4. Crud, or the lack thereof

I have to admit when I get a new PC I have to uninstall all the crap and turn some settings off, but Apple takes it a step further and does not come with any of this junk whatsoever.  So at least they have that going for them in providing no crapware on their computers.

5. Details count

I don’t really see a winnable argument here, as it is how you take care of your computer that counts.

6. Apple is one of the world’s best software companies.

That is opinion, and since I don’t use a Mac computer it is hard to base my opinion on their software and its practical use.  However, I do ever great things on the movie production software and 3-D rendering and so I give a partial credit for them.

7. The Apple Store’s Genius Bar rocks

Well when it is your only job to master the inner workings on one group of computers, then tech support will be great and although we PC’s have great tech support that support is based on brand name computers.  Which means that we have to deal with cranky tech support because they have to know alot of about all the models and sometimes they go a little crazy.  Of course,  I don’t know any horror stories for Mac Tech support and so I will give them a half point as well.

8. Hey, Macs are PCs.

I will say this, Mac computers are the only computer that can quad-boot separate operating systems, meaning that you can run Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems and one more of either Windows or Linux and not any problems with it.  At most PC’s can triple-boot because of the fact we can’t run a Mac operating system on a PC, home wreckers. On that alone I give mac 2 points just because they can run any operating system they want.

While it was close, I give PC the win just because overall they are more dynamic, customizable and “user friendly” and yeah give me the backlash, gotta love opinion.
